How to Manage Negative Feedback

leading personalityWe all want to hear only praise and good things about our work and ourselves, isn’t it? Unfortunately, things are not always that beautifull and we wake up with some negative feedbacks from our bosses, colleagues, family or people we interact occasionally. The secret is knowing how to accept this feedback and transform it into something beneficial to you: opportunity and motivation to become better.

To learn how to accept negative feedback you have to follow a few simple steps:

1. The first and most important step is to understand that there is no problem if you get negative feedback, but it can become a problem if you react inappropriately. Remember that you should not listen to your first instinct, especially if that is to defend yourself or accuse your speaker. Learn to thank for your received feedback and return with your answer when you are ready.

2. After that you need to analyze the information received and figure out where you went wrong, when you didn’t communicate properly or for what reason were your actions and your work misunderstood. It is possible that this negative feedback would not be correctly assigned to you, another person or other persons being responsible for the things that went wrong. It is important to know how to ask why did you get this type of feedback, what went wrong and what you can correct.

3. Learn how to calm down. Anger or nerves, negative reactions of any kind in general will not help, on the contrary. Rejoice that you have the chance to fix mistakes, improve your performance and thus get better. Feedback of any kind is beneficial.

4. Also, if the feedback received it does not seem the right one, ask for more time to come up with an answer, go back to your desk, analyze what you did and how you did it, where do you think the problem intervene, then go well prepared and speak nicely to your interlocutor, giving explanations and evidence to prove what went wrong and why it is not your fault. You have to also come with solutions, because at the end it doen’s matter if you have broken/ruin something or not, you can help other people, right?

5. Move on. No matter who told you negative things about yourself or your work, you must know how to move on, but not in any way, but motivated to become better, more active, more responsible and attentive to all what is happening around you and everything you do in relationship with others, whether is personal relationship or professional.

6. Finally, remember that it is important to ask for a follow-up after the last feedback received, because it’s the only way you will know if you are on the right track and whether your solutions were the right ones.

Whoever receives at one point some negative reactions related either to their work or attitude or other personal things you should not feel bad. Take advantage of what you are given, good or bad, because it’s up to you what you will do next and how you will evolve.
